KARA MARIE
Buongiorno, I’m Kara Marie…an American photographer based in Como, Italy. I’ve been a full-time professional photographer for over 18 years, with a primary specialization in artful black and white intimate portraiture of women, as well as educating and speaking in the photography business space.
Since moving myself and my family from Austin, Texas to Italy 5 years ago, I’ve reconnected with stepping out of the studio every now and then. Lake Como is one of the most beautiful backdrops on earth. One would be crazy to say no to a field trip in this area.
There’s something about Italy that makes people look at-ease and like the best versions of themselves in person and in photos. If you can’t stay forever, at least you’ll have some pretty epic photos documenting yourself here as a souvenir.
Whether it’s an unhurried boat day on Lake Como with your partner, an intimate portrait session in your hotel, or a secret elopement at one of the region’s villas, my photographic approach remains organic and relaxed.
I’m the photographer for the creative, laid-back types who value artfully documented real memories over manufactured perfection.
I will not be shouting orders or rushing the process. I create a breezy experience worthy of “La Dolce Vita”, breaking for a coffee or a spritz as needed. Ease breeds confident photos after all. These philosophies result in gorgeous images that feel authentic to you while simultaneously fantastical and cinematic (Italy is magic that way).

"These photos are a testament that anything is possible."
"There is nothing more powerful than a woman who cannot be defined; who says you can't be both sunshine and cyanide?" These images show both the soft and hard sides of me. I would never in a million years see myself the way Kara's lens captured me and that is why I wanted to do this photo shoot for myself.
I started a journey nearly 4 years ago to reinvent myself for myself. This shoot with Kara was to solidify the success of that journey and a reminder to keep going. We all have different chapters of our lives where we are built up and torn down, only to come back stronger for it. I am proud of who I have become, I had a hell of time becoming her but she is here to stay. These photos are a testament that anything, for me, is possible.
To sum it up: .Some women are "once in a lifetime" type of females, there is no upgrade after her...that is how you made me feel, the whole time and with the outcome. All the hearts to you and your team.

Kara, you are AMAZING!
It was empowering to take the time to do something like this. As women (especially mothers), we too often focus on those around us and don't always take time for ourselves. This was an extra special treat in my year, but I know I will cherish these for decades to come.
I had the best time during the session and left feeling more confident about my body. I'm grateful that there was direction because I would have felt lost otherwise. The images blew me away, both artistically and personally.

Intimate elopements that are a good fit will absolutely be thoughtfully considered. Once a full-time wedding photographer, Lake Como has resurrected my love for celebrations of LOVE. That said, only intimate celebrations will be considered, please fill out the contact form to start the conversation if you’d like to see if we’d be a good fit for each other.

If you would like your photo session to take place on a boat on Lake Como, we will take care of the boat tour reservation (it’s my husband’s boat tour company— all in the family!).
Otherwise, I am happy to provide recommendations and information.
Many of the private villas that are popular for photography will require a photography fee , though most are pretty reasonable.

We’ll determine the rough length of shoot after we chat about the concept and goals of your shoot.
At minimum, an hour. At maximum, an all day affair to document your best day of vacation.

Yes of course. I am based in Como, Italy, and serve the entirety of the Lake Como region for my clients. I am available to travel to other parts of Italy for a small travel fee. Travel throughout Europe is relatively accessible for me and I am happy to consider bookings in the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Portugal, and Switzerland. Travel fee will vary.
