IT’S A METAPHOR

To be transparent, I’m not usually philosophical about my work while I’m behind the camera. In those moments the tone is usually enthusiastic and light-obsessed, sometimes frantic, always with my sitters’ comfort and energy playing the leading role in the flow of things. I can’t say that’s correct or incorrect; it’s just the result of the way I trained myself.

When I’m processing the work and curating a series in the weeks, months, sometimes years after the shoot itself, I find my deeper meaning in the stills. That meaning is obviously a reflection of my current state of mind, of which I then get to study myself to learn what my current state of mind is. Backwards or not, that’s me as an “artist” in a nutshell.

My interpretation of this work will remain a private self-study, and I think I will be doing more of that quiet observation henceforth. The idea of letting photographs speak to the viewer however they do really resonates with me these days.
